How to save recipes from Facebook
Last updated
To save a recipe from Facebook, share the reel or video to Groceree. The app reads the post and watches the video, then writes out the ingredients with their quantities and the steps, so the recipe is in one place to cook from and its ingredients can go straight onto a shopping list.
Facebook is full of recipe videos from pages and groups, and Saved items is where most of them end up. They are easy to save and hard to find again, and the quantities are usually in the video rather than in the post.
Three ways to keep a Facebook recipe
Save the post
Saving a post puts it in your Saved items. You keep a link to the video, not the recipe, and the post is gone if the page removes it.
Copy the post text
Copying the post works when the whole recipe is written there. Often it is not, and the copied text cannot be scaled or turned into a shopping list.
Share it to Groceree
Share the reel or video to Groceree. It reads the post and watches the video, listening to the method and reading the quantities on screen, and gives you a written recipe.
From a Facebook video to your shopping list
Five steps, and only the first two happen in Facebook.

Open the reel or video
01Open the reel or video
Find the recipe in your feed, on a page or in a public group, and open the reel or video itself.

Open the reel or video
Groceree02Share it to Groceree
Tap Share, then the option that opens your phone’s share menu, and pick Groceree. Not in the list on iPhone? Tap More and add it.
03The recipe is written out
Within a minute the recipe opens in Groceree: ingredients with their quantities, numbered steps, servings and a link back to where it came from.
04Untick what you already have
Tap Add on the recipe, choose a list and set the servings. Untick the salt and anything else already in the cupboard.
05It is on the shared list
The rest lands on the list sorted by supermarket aisle, and everyone you share the list with sees it straight away.
What ends up in the saved recipe
- The name of the dish, and the number of servings when the video gives it.
- Every ingredient with its quantity and unit, grouped into parts such as the base or the topping when the video splits them.
- The method as numbered steps, and the cooking time when it is stated.
- A picture from the video, kept as the recipe’s photo.
- A “Watch on Facebook” link back to the video.
- The recipe stays in the language it was written in, with a Translate button to show it in your app language. “Translate imported recipes” in Settings does that for every import.
Where it has limits
- Only public reels and videos can be read. Posts shared to friends only, or inside a private group, cannot be opened.
- Reels and videos work best. A post that is only text or photos is hit and miss; if it does not come through, copy the text and use “Paste text” in the app instead.
- A quantity the video never shows or says stays empty rather than guessed, so check the recipe before you cook.
- A recipe in a language the app does not have is saved in English.
Questions about saving Facebook recipes
- Can I save a recipe from a Facebook video?
- Yes. Share a public Facebook reel or video to Groceree and it writes out the ingredients with quantities and the steps. Groceree is free on iPhone and Android, and saving recipes is part of the free app.
- Does it work with recipes from Facebook groups?
- From public groups, yes. Posts inside a private group cannot be opened by any app outside Facebook, so they cannot be imported.
- Can I paste a Facebook link instead of sharing?
- Yes. Copy the link, then in Groceree tap + on the Recipes tab, choose “Import from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube…” and paste it under “Or paste a link from a social network here”. fb.watch links work too.
- What happens if the page deletes the video?
- The recipe is saved in your Groceree account, so the ingredients and steps stay. Only the “Watch on Facebook” link stops working.
