Groceree vs Crouton: an honest comparison
Last updated
Crouton is an Apple Design Award–winning recipe manager and meal planner for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro, with AI import from websites, photos, PDFs and text, and deep cooking tools. Groceree runs on iPhone and Android, also saves recipes from TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook, and turns them into a grocery list the household shares.
Crouton won the 2024 Apple Design Award for Interaction, and it shows in its cooking tools. What usually decides between the two: is everyone on Apple devices, and do your recipes come from social video?
This page is written by the team behind Groceree. The Crouton facts come from Crouton’s own website and App Store listing, checked on October 4, 2026.

When Crouton is the better choice
There are clear cases where we would point you at Crouton instead.
- Your household is all Apple. Crouton has native apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro, syncs through iCloud, and keeps your recipes in your own iCloud account. Groceree has no Mac or Watch app.
- You want the best cooking tools. Crouton steps through a recipe hands-free, runs timers from the steps, shows an ingredient’s amount when you tap it in a step, and works with Bluetooth scales and the Combustion thermometer.
- You plan meals. Crouton’s weekly planner can fill itself from your saved recipes; Groceree has no meal planner.
- You import from files and follow blogs. Crouton reads PDFs, JSON-LD and other apps’ files, and follows your favorite recipe blogs by feed.
- You want to share the whole recipe library and the meal plan. Crouton shares both with your household; in Groceree you share one cookbook at a time, and the people you invite read and cook from it without changing it.
When Groceree is the better choice
And the cases where we think Groceree is the better fit.
- Someone in the house uses Android. Groceree runs on iPhone and Android with the same shared lists; Crouton is Apple-only.
- Your recipes come from social video. Groceree saves from TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook, and reads the video when the recipe is only said or shown; Crouton’s listing and website do not mention social imports.
- You want a grocery list built for shopping together. Groceree’s lists are shared by link, each person on their own account, update on every phone straight away, sort by aisle and merge a recipe’s ingredients with what is already there. Crouton builds lists from recipes and integrates them with Apple Reminders, but sharing them, aisle sorting and merging are not listed.
- You use the app in a language other than English, French or German. Groceree runs in 13 languages.
The short answer
If your household is all Apple and cooking is the part you care about most, Crouton is one of the best-made recipe apps there is. If anyone uses Android, your recipes come from TikTok and Instagram, or the shared shopping list is the part that matters, Groceree is the better fit, and it is free to try on both platforms.
