Groceree vs Samsung Food: an honest comparison

Last updated

Samsung Food, the app that used to be Whisk, is a large free food platform: 240,000 public recipes, communities, a meal planner, shared shopping lists and a web app, with Samsung appliance tie-ins. Groceree is a smaller, focused app for saving the recipes you find — from TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, websites and cookbooks — and shopping for them from a shared list.

Samsung bought Whisk in 2019 and renamed it Samsung Food in 2023. If you are comparing the two, the questions are usually where your recipes come from, and whether you want a whole platform or one job done well.

This page is written by the team behind Groceree. The Samsung Food facts come from Samsung Food’s own website, help center and app store listings, checked on October 4, 2026.

A cell marked “Not listed” means the feature is not mentioned in that app’s own store listing, website or help pages. It may still exist — we would rather say we could not confirm it than claim it is missing.

When Samsung Food is the better choice

There are clear cases where we would point you at Samsung Food instead.

  • You want a lot for free. Samsung Food’s free tier includes 240,000 recipes, communities, a meal planner, shared lists and nutrition scores, with no ads.
  • You plan meals. Samsung Food has a free weekly planner, and AI-tailored plans on Food+; Groceree has no meal planner.
  • You work from a computer or a Samsung kitchen. There is a web app and a Chrome extension, and it can send cooking settings to SmartThings ovens.
  • You want to discover new recipes more than save your own. Its catalog and communities are far larger than Groceree’s Discover tab.

When Groceree is the better choice

And the cases where we think Groceree is the better fit.

  • You want the whole recipe saved. Samsung Food’s help center says the instructions of a website recipe stay on the creator’s site; Groceree saves the ingredients and the steps, so the recipe is readable without the page.
  • Your recipes come from TikTok, Instagram or YouTube. Groceree saves them, including recipes that are only said or shown in the video; Samsung Food does not list video imports from those apps.
  • You scan cookbooks often. Photos of printed or handwritten recipes are ordinary imports in Groceree; Samsung Food gives three free scans before Food+.
  • Your list is long, or your store is laid out its own way. Groceree lists hold up to 300 items and the aisles can be reordered to match your store; Samsung Food caps a list at 100 items, and its aisles are fixed.
  • You cook in a language Samsung Food does not offer, or from recipes written in one. Groceree runs in 13 languages and translates an imported recipe with one tap.

The short answer

If you want a big free platform to discover recipes, plan the week and shop online, from a phone or a computer, Samsung Food gives you more. If your recipes come from social video and cookbooks and you want each one saved whole and turned into a list the household shares, Groceree does that job more completely.

Common questions

Is Samsung Food the same as Whisk?
Yes. Samsung bought Whisk in 2019, and it became Samsung Food in 2023. A newer app called “Whisk: Recipe Keeper & Planner” is made by a different company, Forkflow, and is unrelated.
Does Samsung Food save recipes from TikTok?
Its help center lists saving from websites, Pinterest and Facebook, and scanning photos, but not TikTok, Instagram or YouTube video. Groceree saves from all four, and reads the video when the caption is not enough.
Do I need a Samsung phone for Samsung Food?
No. Samsung Food runs on iPhone, Android and the web.
Can I move my Samsung Food recipes to Groceree?
There is no direct import. Recipes you saved from websites can be added again by sharing the original page into Groceree.
